Gravel & Gold is a shop in the Mission District of San Francisco run by three ladies, Cass, Lisa, and Nile. Neighborhood shops must have a novel point of view when selecting their goods, otherwise potential customers will take their business to chain stores or buy things online. The importance of supporting small local shopkeepers cannot be overlooked. Small shops keep communities alive with offerings from local artisans and craftspeople.
Interior design can express individual character when furnishings and accessories are found locally. While shopping in the Mission, INSTUDIO interior Design Directors Samuel Fleming Lewis & Stephen Kladder gazed upon a window display of a contemporary version of a unique antique item in the window of GRAVEL & GOLD: a combination chair & ladder.
Based on a pattern traced to Benjamin Franklin, the contemporary version is crafted two at a time from a single sheet of plywood with almost no waste by San Francisco woodworker Raven Mahon of RJM Woodworks in a Mendocino, CA workshop. The hooks are forged by local metalworker, Jeff Burwell, who has recently opened a showroom in the front of his Valencia Street workshop between 18th and 19th Streets.
The clean lines of the combination chair & ladder make it easy to fit within any décor. Kitchen, family room or the home library will benefit from this practical contemporary piece of locally made furniture with a rich American history.
