A Family Room for All

A large family room often has to serve more than one purpose. If the family room is a large sunny loft like space with views of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge what family member wouldn’t want to use it?  This family room was used as a part time home office, a music room and alternate television viewing area. It needed a new furniture plan that was suited to all of the family members.

Designers Samuel F. Lewis and Stephen Kladder of Instudio were brought on board to restyle this family room.

The homeowners had wisely selected bleached oak floors and creamy white walls for the room. Along with tall windows, the room is bright even on foggy days. Kristen S. already had a great selection of furniture to choose from throughout the house. The homeowners installed dark colored matchstick blinds at the windows. The Instudio team suggested that they add curtains to soften the space.

Lewis and Kladder imagined a French artist atelier for the theme of the room. The furniture plan was developed in three zones.

The home office is closest to the windows. Borrowed from the living room is an oval drop leaf table, a matching white painted Victorian settee and chair upholstered in golden green damask, a Louis XV style chair and a cream colored rug.  From the television room a large Asian amoire was employed to hide office supplies and electronics.

The baby grand piano was placed in the middle of the room along with a pair of canvas slip covered contemporary love seats. A pair of Chinoiserie tables that were once used as plant stands in the living room are now family room coffee tables. A Persian rug in gold, red and green tones anchors this part of the room.

The darkest part of the long room received a long canvas slip covered sofa and a plasma television.

Kristen says that everyone is pleased with the restyle of the family room. She selected furniture that she liked over several years time, everything that she had was used. A few slipcovers, curtains, accessories and lamps were all that was needed to breathe new life this room used by the entire family.
