Furniture by Architect Norman Cherner

Mid-Century Modernist architect Norman Cherner was a pioneer in the development of prefabricated low-cost modular dwellings.  Cherner was educated in the Bauhaus tradition of interdisciplinary design. Although best known for his furniture, his designs include graphics, glassware & lighting.

Found in furniture collections worldwide the 1958 molded plywood ‘Cherner Chair’ for Plycraft has became his most recognized design. The Cherner Chair Company was founded in 1999 by his sons Benjamin & Thomas to reissue their father’s designs using his original drawings and specifications. The company has also introduced table and storage designs by Benjamin Cherner to complement the classic molded plywood chairs and stools.

The sculptural quality of gracefully curved shapes, beautiful woods along with the optional simple graphic pad upholstery gives chairs by Norman Cherner a timeless appeal usually reserved for beautiful works of art.

INSTUDIO interior Design Directors recommend investing in modernist classics by licensed manufacturers when restoring or restyling mid-century interior architecture. A Cherner chair can act as a sculptural counterpoint to antique, contemporary, classic or rustic interior design styles.
