Furnishing a New Garden in Red

Fashion icon Diana Vreeland said “Red is the great clarifier — bright and revealing. I can’t imagine becoming bored with red — it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.” As fashion editor at Harpers Bazaar and Editor in Chief at Vogue Magazine, Vreeland was known for her sense of style, cutting edge thoughts and avant-garde quotes.

“I want this place to look like a garden, but a garden in hell”, was her unique way of describing red on red décor to her decorator friend the iconic Billy Baldwin. In 1955 the two went on to create rooms in her Park Avenue apartment that lovers of both fashion and interior design still talk about today.

INSTUDIO selected four different design directions for a fresh new “Garden in Hell” for an imaginary young New York fashion editor following in the footsteps of Vreeland, named “Phoebe”.  Phoebe’s red on red décor would blend antiques, modernist classics, vintage modern and contemporary furnishings with original art, all brought together from several sources:  high end luxury showrooms to flea market finds. The unifying element is a love of reds.

“Don’t just be your ordinary dull self. Why don’t you be ingenious and make yourself into something else?”, “The only real elegance is in the mind; if you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it.”

INSTUDIO is a fertile garden of imaginative design!
