Charles Pfister, San Francisco’s International Modernist

Pfister CHAIR ARTICLE IMAGE2INSTUDIO Design Directors were sourcing vintage furniture for design clients at “stuff” when they came across a classic black leather lounge chair in pristine condition. They immediately recognized the chair as a Charles Pfister design for Knoll International.  Their clients immediately purchased the chair having it delivered to their home the following day.

In the 1970’s Architect Charles Pfister was Interior Design Director at Skidmore Owings & Merrill when he designed the Pfister Lounge Collection for Knoll. Reinventing the details and proportions of a tuxedo style sofa, he refined his seating collection as new modernist classic that has never lost appeal. His designs have staying power. Vintage sofas and chairs are always in high demand. Design Within Reach now sells the iconic Knoll collection.

Pfister’s talents weren’t limited to corporate designs. His table and cabinet collections for Knoll were a sophisticated combination of materials and details that easily blended into contemporary or modernist business and residential interiors. The forward thinking Renaissance man was sought after globally for both his restrained yet opulent corporate and residential designs. Charles Pfister designed Furniture, products and lighting for America’s most luxurious brands including Knoll International, Baker Furniture and Boyd Lighting.

Charles Pfister transitioned in 1990 but his philosophies for “opulence without waste” and “careful craftsmanship” live on through his sense of style and the design of his furnishings and products.
