INSTUDIO makes life’s transitions a specialty. When a former client decided to trade her suburban silicon valley, California bungalow for a San Francisco flat she called Samuel Fleming Lewis and Stephen Kladder for design direction. She knew that the designers could translate her existing contemporary furnishings and art that they selected for her years before from a suburban to an urban home to match her style.
The client’s Nob Hill flat is close to several city chic shops and restaurants. She traded her treadmill for “walk hill”, getting exercise by walking to her financial district job rather than driving. The flats spacious light filled rooms, classical details and city views are the perfect backdrop for her new life style. The designers developed furniture and design plans that utilized all of her existing furniture and art from her previous home.
Except for a pair lacquered bedside tables she wanted all new furnishings, textiles and art in her city Master Bedroom. She desired a softer look than the sleek contemporary bedroom that she’d left behind. Knowing that she loved aqua blues and purples Samuel and Stephen developed a palette that featured her colors without dominating the room. The Design Directors created an unexpected combination that blended mid-century styled furniture with timeless patterns in soft neutrals. The palette was composed in hues of white, aqua, sand, walnut, peacock blue and purple.
Choosing aqua as the color of the large upholstered bed was a bold stroke that surprised the client. A stylish sand and white print duvet cover was paired with aqua and white embroidered bedding. A round white Saarinen style table became a focal point on approach to the room. White is repeated as lacquered bedside tables and her Barcelona style bench. The walnut detail of the bench is repeated as walnut frames on a trio of drawings by artist/designer Samuel Fleming Lewis. A patchwork style sand toned rug with interesting patterns adds a layer of softness. Peacock blue Blenko glass lamps add sparkle and color to the room.
Years ago when touring San Francisco Open Studios with INSTUDIO Design Directors to find art the client discovered and adored the soft yet colorful abstract paintings of artist Susan Spies. She recently purchased her second Spies painting for her new bedroom in cloudlike rich purples. Also included in her art collection displayed in the home is a painting with shades of aqua and an underwater botanical abstraction from artist and INSTUDIO Design Director Stephen Kladder kladderart.com
